Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (Late) was a highly influential figure in U.S. politics, serving as the Democratic Chief Deputy Whip in the House of Representatives. Representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District, centered in Houston, she holds senior positions on the House Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and the Budget Committee. Notably, she chaired the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
Jackson Lee (Late) authored the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing a new federal holiday after 38 years, and played a pivotal role in renewing the Violence Against Women Act, signed into law after nearly a decade.
Throughout her fourteen terms in office, Jackson Lee (Late) has championed numerous legislative initiatives, including criminal justice reforms, civil rights protections, and healthcare advancements. She was recognized as a leading voice for women, children, and minority communities, advocating for initiatives like the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.
Her influence extends beyond legislation; she co-founded the Congressional Pakistan Caucus and chairs the Congressional Black Caucus Energy Braintrust. Recognized for her effectiveness and influence, she has been named among the most effective and influential legislators in Congress.
Educationally, Jackson Lee holds a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School. She was married with two children and two grandchildren, actively involved in her community and dedicated to upholding constitutional rights for all.
